Most plants sell scrap to three buyers who know they are the only three being asked. Here is what actually changes the price, in order of how much it matters.
A phone-based scrap sale reaches the buyers your storekeeper already knows. They know that too. The price they quote is the price they know nobody else is quoting against. Nothing about that is dishonest — it is simply what happens when only three people are asked.
This is worth more than everything else on this list combined. Fifteen verified buyers bidding against each other for forty minutes produce a number that three buyers on a phone never will. Your existing buyers stay and often win — they just win at a market price. If you do one thing, do this one.
A mixed lot is priced at the value of its worst component, because the buyer has to assume the worst. MS turnings sold separately from SS cuttings, aluminium separated from ferrous, copper winding kept out of the mixed bin — the extra hour in the yard is usually the best-paid hour of the week.
Scrap is weight-heavy and freight-sensitive. A lot that fills a truck attracts buyers from further away; a half-load only attracts local ones. Where you can, accumulate to a full load before listing.
Who loads, who weighs, where the weighment is taken, and how long the buyer has to lift. Every one of these is an argument waiting to happen if it is not written down, and buyers price that risk into their bid.
The last few percent of price almost always appears in the final minutes. A hard stop rewards whoever clicks fastest. An extending clock lets the price find its level.
Asset and scrap disposal is where auditors look hardest, because there is no purchase invoice to compare against. A timestamped log of every bid answers that question before it is asked — and it costs nothing extra if the auction produces it automatically.
The largest single lever is the number of buyers who can bid, not how hard you negotiate. After that comes grade separation, lot sizing to a full truck, and a clear closing time with auto-extend. Most plants gain more from the first two than from anything else they try.
